BLOGGER & FASHION MAVEN, YOUNG MOM MICAELA ON BEING A WOMAN FIRST & FOLLOWING YOUR INSTINCTS
Meet Micaela, a mom, blogger and ex-fashion denizen, who reminds us to follow our instincts and who loves to wear "happy" colors. We wholeheartedly agree!
Her megawatt smile and positive outlook are truly infectious. Read her interview below:
1) Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m 28, originally from Bergamo, Italy. After years of living in Paris I now live in Florence with my family: Julien, my big love, Teo, my firstborn who is 2 years old, and Lia, my 6 month old daughter.
I worked in Fashion for many years, but today I work as a mother and entrepreneur, writing my blog likemiljian.com . I love telling stories and that’s why I’ve created a space online where I can share all of our adventures. Being a mother has been the most natural thing for me, I adore every little thing about raising my children, and all the special moments we share. That’s why it’s so easy for me to share much of my family life online.
2) After reading your blog, a sort of family diary, we’ve discovered that you gave birth at home and that you still breastfeed.
My home birth was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It allowed me to feel loved and taken care of in my own familiar space. It was an intense and profound experience in my life. I believe it’s very important to follow the rhythms of nature and to listen to your body.
3) Given your aesthetic and your background in fashion, do you think it’s important to care about your appearance once you’re a mother?
I’ve always reminded myself since becoming a mother not to forget that I’m still a woman. For that reason, since the day I gave birth to my firstborn, I’ve always paid attention to taking care of myself. I set aside time for myself everyday to put on makeup, do my hair and get dressed. Having a baby changes a woman’s body so it’s really important to continue to feel good about yourself. When we take care of ourselves we’re happier. And our children benefit from having a happier mother.
4) Have you found it difficult finding breastfeeding friendly clothing?
To this day I find that clothing for pregnant and breastfeeding women is really lacking. It seems as if people making maternity clothes think women no longer care about how they look once they have a baby. It’s wrong and far from the truth. While I was pregnant and now that I’m breastfeeding, I wanted to show that I can still be beautiful and be the same stylish woman I was before having children.
5) What 3 items in your wardrobe do you wear the most now that you’re breastfeeding?
My number 1 piece is my nightshirt. I breastfeed often at night so it’s important to have easy access when I’m half awake. I also wear soft tank tops during the day under other shirts, allowing me to lift my top and breastfeed while I hide my belly with the tank. The third style that makes life easier for me as a breastfeeding mom are shirts and sweaters that are open in the front- it’s super comfortable.
6) Is there a nursing top that you’ve bought that you never use?
It may sound strange but that would have to be the nursing bra I bought. I find it extremely uncomfortable.
7) In your opinion what body parts do you think a breastfeeding mom usually tries to hide?
I personally don’t have any, and I don’t think women should hide any part of themselves. I think many actually try to hide the act of breastfeeding itself. I nurse my babies everywhere. There is nothing more natural for a mother than to breastfeed and for that reason we should feel free to be able to nurse anywhere.
8) What colors do you gravitate to in your wardrobe?
I love color! I rarely wear black. I love it when my outfit is “happy.” It makes me feel good.
9) Any advice you would give a new mom?
My first piece of advice would be to follow your instinct. For mothers that want to breastfeed, do what feels natural for you. Don’t follow a clock. Nurse your baby whenever your baby is hungry and for however long they want. Enjoy every minute of it and live in the moment. It’ll be good for both you and your baby.
Thanks Micaela for your advice and your uplifting attitude about all things motherhood. I think we're all ready to add a bit of "color" into our lives as well!
