COMBAT POSTNATAL DEPLETION & FEEL LIKE YOURSELF AGAIN
I recently read an interesting article on Gwenyth Paltrow’s blog “goop” about postnatal depletion and it hit home. Since my daughter’s birth 17 months ago I’ve been feeling tired, forgetful, lacking energy and just not 100% myself. Any other new moms feeling the same??
According to Dr. Oscar Serrallach, a family practitioner focusing on nutritional and environmental medicine in Australia, the most common symptoms of Postnatal Depletion are:
- Fatigue and Exhaustion
- Tired on waking
- Falling asleep unintentionally
- Hyper-vigilance (feeling tired & wired)
- Frustration, feeling overwhelmed
- Brain fog
- Loss of libido
The article helped me realize that at least I’m not alone. Dr. Oscar Serrallach estimates that 50% of new moms suffer from Postnatal Depletion even 10 years after giving birth. He talks about how hard it is for mothers to get back on their feet, physically and emotionally, after their baby’s birth. He also discusses the causes of Postnatal Depletion, plus what women can do to feel like themselves again. The four pillars of health that his program focuses on to help new moms are: Sleep, Purpose, Activity and Nutrition. For more information about his program check out the article on goop. Part of our philosophy at Teat & Cosset is taking care of the mother, who, after giving birth, is often neglected as all the attention goes to her baby. Our mission is to help mothers realize that it is just as important to take care of and nurture themselves.
